HISTORY of the Building
Originally built in 1806, The "Dorris House" was erected by James Dorris, who purchased the lot from William Sears for $381.29. The house became The Excelsior Hotel from approx. 1891-1901, then a succession of residences until the early 1960's when it was remodeled for use as a bank, and remained the St. Michaels branch office for a succession of banks, ending with the Bank of America which closed the St. Michaels location in 2013. The Diebold Vault remains on premise. Ghost hunters have spent the night on several occasions to investigate paranormal activities upstairs. The house is full of intrigue and historical stories.
